inCircle Frequently Asked Questions

What is UC inCircle?

UC inCircle is a networking community that serves all University of Cincinnati alumni. UC inCircle offers all the basic functions of an online directory (the ability to search for friends and colleagues), with the added ability to create your own personal network.

Alumni invite friends and colleagues to join their network (or "become their friend"). Once you develop your network, you will also be linked to the networks of all the people you know, exponentially increasing the power of the UC network. You'll be surprised at how many connections you'll have – it's like a Bearcat “six degrees of separation!”

InCircle is a popular service used by alumni organizations across the country and was created by students at Stanford University.

When I attempt to login for the first time, it says my “credentials are invalid.” Why am I receiving this message?

If you receive an error or if the auto response deems your "credentials invalid," you may chosen under the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) to put a restriction on your university file. This may have been done when you were a student at the University.  Because you have a FERPA restriction, a block on the release or transmission of your “directory information” currently is in force.  Therefore, by Federal Law, we are unable to grant you registration access to inCircle, UC’s Alumni Online Community.

If you would like to change your status with the University and remove your FERPA restriction, you can do so by contacting  Jennifer Heisey at the UC Alumni Association, filling out a form to change your status and your record will be approved to register for inCircle.

For more information on FERPA, click here

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Jennifer Heisey at 513-556-4344 or Jennifer.Heisey@uc.edu

After I've logged in, how do I get started?

Click on "My Profile."  There you can update your Personal, Business, School and Social profiles by clicking on the appropriate links. You can choose to share as much or as little information as possible about yourself.

Once you create your profile, click on "Home" and start inviting friends to join your network!

To find friends, type their names in the "Search" box.

Once you find your friends, click on "Add ______ as friend". You will then see the e-mail message that will be sent to your friend. You are encouraged to add a personal message in the text field, especially if it's someone you haven't spoken with in a while!

As your friends receive your invitation e-mails, they will start responding and your network will start to grow.

After you've invited friends, you can use UC inCircle to send messages to your network, make professional connections like finding a contact at a specific company, sell a car, find tickets to an event – almost anything!

How can I use UC inCircle to find a job?

There are several ways!

There is a dynamic and interactive feature in inCircle is designed specifically to assist you in finding the perfect job opportunity.  Once you log into inCircle, click on the "Jobs" tab.  Here you can search jobs, browse jobs, browse companies, post jobs and see who in your network has employment opportunities available.

If you are targeting a specific company or industry, you can do a search for that company name or industry in the "Jobs" area or in the "Advanced Search" area. Then, check the results to see if anyone in your network matches your search. If someone in your network matches your search, then simply contact him or her directly. If an individual who is not in your network fits the bill, you can still contact that person, introduce yourself as a fellow UC alumnus and ask for advice or insight on the company or industry. You'd be surprised at how many Bearcats are willing to help each other out!

Not sure which company you want to work for? Send a message out to your network with information about the type of job you're looking for. You may also post a message in the community forums.

If you are interested in relocating to a certain city, chances are there is a UC alumni network there.  Look for a regional alumni network in the Groups section of inCircle and post a message in that groups message forum.

Post your resume in your business profile – it’s searchable in the system.

Look for alumni who have indicated they would be willing to talk to others about career information, and use them as a resource.

If you see a job opportunity that would be great for another UC Alumnus, you can send them an email about the position right through the inCircle network.

How do I use inCircle to post a job opportunity at my company?

To post jobs in the inCircle Alumni Community, visit the inCircle Jobs Portal.

Here, you will be asked to create a username and password.  Once you login, input your company profile and  job description.  Credit Card and Pay Pal are accepted forms of payment.

UC Alumni with access to inCircle can utilize the Jobs feature FREE of charge. Just register, login and start telling your fellow UC grads about opportunities available!

How can I use UC inCircle to find a friend from college?

Simply look them up in the "Search" box. Keep in mind that some people change their names or go by a nickname. If you don't have luck using the keyword search, try the advanced search function. With advanced search, you can look for someone by a number of criteria, including class year, major, city, etc.

top

What if I can't find my friend?

Don't give up! First, consider whether your friend goes by a nickname. For example, you won't find Joe Bearcat if Joe's full name is Joseph Bearcat. So, try searching by the full name or first or last name only (most effective if the person has a less common name).

Still can't find him or her? Use the advanced search function and use criteria like class year, major, etc. If the person you're looking for is a very recent graduate (within the past several months), it's possible the registrar hasn't updated his or her record yet. In that case, you're likely to find that person if you wait a month or so. If you still can't find a person, e-mail the Alumni Association or call 513-556-4454 or toll-free 877-4-UCALUM.

How can I use UC inCircle to sell a car, find a roommate, or get a date?

You can do all of this and more in the UC inCircle “Community” section. You will see forums listed in the section by various categories.  Make sure you place your message in the forum that best suits your needs. Search postings that other alumni have made, or post something of your own.

Next to the person's name, you'll see either "Pending," which means an invitation has been sent but not responded to yet, or "Expired," meaning it's been more than 30 days since you invited her without a response.

Before you can re-invite your friend, you must delete that invitation. Once the original invitation has been deleted, you may invite them again using the "add a friend" process.
