A&S Connections: Entrepreneurship

Whether you are interested in starting your own business, or are seeking advice on how to expand, our panel of alumni entrepreneurs will cover a variety of topics germane to small business owners and blossoming entrepreneurs. A networking reception will follow.

Tickets are $5 for alumni and complimentary for current UC students. Business casual attire is recommended and heavy appetizers will be provided. Hourly parking is available in either Campus Green Garage or Calhoun Street Garage.

James Avant, Neuroscience ’15
OCD Cakes

James AvantJames Avant IV, owner of OCD Cakes, LLC. is a native Cincinnatian and 2015 graduate from the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. James graduated with a B.S. in Neurobiology and a minor in Spanish with the original goal of attending medical school and becoming a physician. During his collegiate career, James’ niche for baking resulted as a byproduct of his ongoing journey with anxiety. As a result, he started Obsessive Cake Disorder (OCD) Cakes. OCD Cakes offers custom celebratory pastries in conjunction with mental health advocacy within the community.

As OCD Cakes grew, so did James’ industry experience which laid the foundation the foundation for his most recent venture, Bakeologie, LLC. Operating from the Findlay Kitchen in Over the Rhine, Bakeologie exists to bring our friends and neighbors around the table to eat, build, and create community. Launching mid-January, Bakeologie will provide an affordable cooking and baking class experience to its surrounding communities.

James believes that there is nothing traditional about the road to becoming an entrepreneur. When he grows up, he wants to be a philanthropist.

James Savage, Communication ’06
Savage Syndications

James SavageJames Savage graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Communication Theory degree in 2006. After graduation, he helped start Savage Syndications, a business development company in Lexington, KY, which uses the seven touch method. Over the past ten years, James and his team has helped many companies grow and expand through their methods, specifically calling campaigns. Given that the core function of the business is to help build the relationship between clients and their prospects James has had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clients including, manufacturing, IT, event sponsorship, and advertising. Maria Schade, Psychology ’89
Grass Fed Gourmet

Maria SchadeMaria Moll Schade, a 1989 A&S graduate (Personnel Administration & Industrial Relations), brings many years of business experience to her partnership in the growing foodpreneur start-up, Grass Fed Gourmet. Maria started Grass Fed Gourmet with her sister, Debbie Moll, in November 2015 to create and share CocoGhee, a healthy and delicious gourmet spread. Previously, Maria enjoyed a varied career, mostly managing business processes and human resources for non-profits in healthcare and education. Maria’s business acumen is an indispensable foil for Debbie’s science and nutrition background and “fly by the seat of her pants” creativity. Maria recently introduced a tenant user group at the Northern Kentucky Incubator Kitchen to more fully utilize the collective knowledge and energy of the growing foodpreneur community.

Jacob Shidler, Environmental Science ‘17

Jacob ShidlerJacob graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a bachelors of science in botany, deciding against taking over his father’s construction company. Instead, he pursued his love for science and the outdoors, with the goal of becoming a scientist and field researcher. He enrolled in the graduate program at the University of Cincinnati and studied rainwater quality, looking at the impact of gutter material on roof harvested rainwater in Africa. His creative approach to digitizing & organizing his collected data caught his advisors' attention. In fact, they were more interested in his data collection methodology than the actual data. That methodology became it's own digital platform called Liquid, now used by thousands of users. Including researchers at the University of Southern California, University of Hawaii and the "Adventure Scientists" Organization.

Katie Trauth Taylor, English and Comparative Literature ’10
Taylor Technical Consulting

Katie Trauth TaylorKathryn (Katie) Trauth Taylor owns and operates a national writing consultancy called Taylor Technical Consulting, which provides technical writing and content marketing for clients in government, healthcare, engineering, and scientific and technical industries. Her team of expert writers all have specialized expertise in technical communication, writing and designing white paper reports, research articles, grant proposals, literature reviews, case studies, infographics, marketing materials, blog content and more. They specialize in organizational storytelling and building content strategies that generate brand engagement and thought leadership. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a Master's in English (2010), Katie completed her PhD in Rhetoric and Composition at Purdue University (2014) with an emphasis on public rhetoric, community engagement, and professional writing. Her peer-reviewed publications have appeared in multiple journals within the fields of technical communication, composition and rhetoric, systems engineering, and healthcare. Nick Zingarelli, Philosophy ‘01
Zingarelli Law Office, LLC

Nick Zingarelli is an accomplished attorney and the successful owner of Zingarelli Law Office, LLC. He received his J.D. from Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University and his B.A. in Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati where he was awarded the Cincinnatus Scholarship. With his education and keen business sense he worked hard at learning an area of the law where he saw great opportunity for growth in consumer and small business bankruptcy. For the past 12 years, he has focused his legal career on helping deliver people to fiscal health with a fresh financial start. He not only is sought out by consumers and small businesses for help but has received acknowledgement and accolades from his peers and the legal community for his proficiency in bankruptcy. Upon completing law school he was awarded a medal of excellence by the American Bankruptcy Institute. Mr. Zingarelli has received the prestigious Rising Star Attorney designation from Super Lawyers on multiple occasions, including from 2014 through 2016. He has given presentations by invitation on numerous different bankruptcy topics at local, regional, and national seminars, including a panel discussion at the 2012 National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees’ seminar. He has also had his knowledge sought after for publication and has co‐authored 3 books in his field and published his first solo authored book in 2015.

Nick also finds time to serve his community in many ways. He is very involved with his alma mater and is currently serves as chair of the Community Engagement Committee for the University of Cincinnati McMicken College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board. Nick also helps protect the community from predatory and unprofessional individuals through his service by appointment on the Cincinnati Bar Association Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee and the CBA Grievance Committee. He has previously served as a mock trial coach for Elder High School where he helped to shape young legal minds and spark an enthusiasm for the law. He is the past co‐chair of the Associate Board of Tender Mercies where he raised money and awareness for homeless individuals with mental health challenges.

Mr. Zingarelli is not only professionally successful but also has an equal work‐life balance as an attentive and loving husband to wife Rebecca and father to 7 year old son Giovanni. His family resides in Anderson.

Hicks has spent the last eight years refining the principles and processes of building professional relationships. At one point in his career he went on over 1200 1-to-1s with other professionals in the region over a 18 month period. He still completes almost 10 1:1s per week all while spending most of his time training his staff weekly and members on how to build relationships at no cost. Making a long-lasting, positive impact on as many entrepreneurial-minded people is Hicks' vision and top priority. His role is pioneering new teams, new programs, and new territories, training and development, implementing new processes for retention, business and relationship development, overseeing more than 150 wonderful volunteer leaders and their success.
