UC Homecoming: Friendships, Fond Memories and Football Highlight UC’s Homecoming Celebration
The University of Cincinnati welcomes alumni, students, friends and fans to campus for reunions, tailgating, the parade, and the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 22.
October 13, 2016
The University of Cincinnati’s annual Homecoming celebration returns to the Uptown Campus on Saturday, Oct. 22. A full weekend of festivities will be anchored by UC’s football game against East Carolina University in historic Nippert Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Game tickets are still available at www.gobearcats.com/tickets. The game will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
All the pageantry of Homecoming will be on full display, with the Homecoming parade as a traditional focal point. The parade will begin its annual journey down Clifton Avenue at 3 p.m., featuring 14 floats, five marching bands, and generations of Bearcats lining the parade route. (Get complete parade route and street-closing details.) Student-built floats will reflect the election-season theme “Bearcat for President.” UC Athletics Hall of Famer Kenyon Martin will serve as parade grand marshal. A 15-year NBA veteran, Martin was a standout on the UC men’s basketball team from 1996 through 2000. As a senior, he was the consensus National Player of the Year and was chosen first overall in the 2000 NBA Draft (the last American-born college senior to earn that distinction).
While the UC-East Carolina game is the centerpiece of the Homecoming schedule, a full slate of activities over the weekend will provide students, alumni and college groups with many opportunities to enjoy the occasion, with the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center serving as a hub for many of the festivities.
On Friday night, Oct. 21, the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association will host its annual Homecoming Kickoff Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Held on Sigma Sigma Commons immediately southeast of the Myers Alumni Center, the free event will include entertainment, complimentary food and drinks (with a cash bar), and visits from UC leaders, the Bearcat mascot and cheerleaders. On Saturday, the Myers Alumni Center will be the site of the Bearcats Blitz indoor/outdoor tailgate, with the tailgate lot opening at 1 p.m. and the building at 3 p.m.
“Homecoming is our signature event with something for all Bearcats, whether they’re many decades removed from graduation, still in school, or anywhere in between,” said UC Alumni Association executive director Jennifer Heisey, A&S ’97. “Thousands of members of the UC Family will be reconnecting with the people and places that helped shape their lives, while celebrating the common bonds that all of us share. The campus is beautiful, the relationships are special, and Homecoming brings it all together.”
