Pharmacy Alumni Council Welcomes New Graduates to Alumni Family

May 31, 2017

Ahead of commencement ceremonies in late April, the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy Alumni Council hosted a lunch program for the fourth-year students to welcome them to the alumni family and invite them to stay connected with their college.

“It is important to demonstrate how the alumni council can be a resource to students as they graduate and enter the workforce, and then in turn how the students can give back to their alma mater as alumni,” said Bri Coggins, Associate Director of Alumni Relations for the college.

“I cannot recommend highly enough the need for continuing involvement with the college that provided so much to me,” said Aaron Dershak, PharmD ’00, ’04, who attended the lunch as a member of the alumni council. “Interacting with the future leaders of the profession helps me to cultivate my passion for pharmacy through those students who are standing where I once stood. That is personally gratifying and a means by which I stay abreast of the changes to the practice of pharmacy.”

Pharmacy Alumni CouncilAbout his participation in the Pharmacy Alumni Council, Dershak explained, “Engagement with the alumni council is a fantastic way to network with dedicated, like-minded, motivated pharmacists. Involvement with the college and the students allows me the personal satisfaction of giving back to something bigger than myself. Too often in the working world, you become myopic and forget all of the mentors and benefactors you had along the way.”

The College of Pharmacy Alumni Council seeks to foster fellowship among alumni, provide opportunities for continuing education, and serve as a liaison between alumni and the college, faculty, administration and students. The council facilitates programs to keep alumni engaged with the college, including the distinguished alumni awards process, a golf outing to benefit student scholarships, an annual Keeneland trip, and networking events.
