Law: Harold C. Schott Lecture

Wednesday, Sept. 9
12:15-1:15 p.m.

Donald P. Klekamp College of Law, Room 160
2925 Campus Green Drive
Cincinnati, OH

About the Lecture
Is international law in crisis? Recent international conflicts have reignited debate over the strength of the international legal system. While many view these events as evidence of widespread violations of international law, others argue that such challenges are not new. In this lecture, Professor Jacob Katz Cogan offers a different perspective, arguing that the defining issue today is not simply noncompliance with international law, but a declining commitment by key global actors, including the United States, to the international legal system itself.

About the Lecturer
Jacob Katz Cogan is the Judge Joseph P. Kinneary Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati Donald P. Klekamp College of Law and an Affiliate Faculty Member in the Department of History. A leading scholar of international law, his research examines international organizations, global governance, and the practice and history of international law.

Before joining UC, Professor Cogan served as an attorney-adviser in the U.S. Department of State's Office of the Legal Adviser, where he represented the United States before international tribunals and advised policymakers on international legal issues. He is the recipient of the Department of State's Superior Honor Award and has held visiting appointments at Vanderbilt University Law School and the University of Chicago Law School.

Professor Cogan is the author and coeditor of numerous books and articles on international law, serves in leadership roles with several prominent international law publications and organizations, and is a two-time recipient of the UC College of Law's Harold C. Schott Scholarship Award and Goldman Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

The event is complimentary; however, advance registration is requested by Friday, Sept. 4.
1 hour of CLE has been applied for in OH and KY.
