Return to SCFMS this Homecoming for an Alumni Reception celebrating the people, connections and community that have shaped SCFMS through the years.

Spend time with faculty, fellow alumni, students, and friends of SCFMS. The reception will feature a brief talk by Dr. Abel Gustafson, “The Persuasion Paradox: Why Your Strongest Evidence Could Be Your Weakest Argument.”

We often assume that changing minds means presenting the strongest evidence, stating our case confidently, and countering opposing arguments. But research in communication and psychology suggests persuasion is often far less straightforward. Drawing on research from psychology and communication — including his own work on persuasion and environmental issues — Dr. Gustafson will explore why stories can sometimes outperform statistics, why acknowledging uncertainty can increase credibility, and why conceding a point may actually make an argument more persuasive.
